Fairview Cemetery, located in Middletown, NJ, wants to build a two-chamber crematorium in the middle of the Oak Hill/Colts Glen residential developments. This is also in the immediate area of retail stores and other residential neighborhoods that are located outside of the required 200 ft notification zone. You will recognize the names: Union Square, Maguire’s Grove, Whole Foods and The Village at Chapel Hill townhouses.
In August 2017, the application to build was approved by the Middletown Planning Board but rejected by the Zoning board. Fairview is again submitting their plan on March 20, 2019 to the Middletown Planning Board.
This is toxic plan for all of Middletown and surrounding towns. It sets a very bad precedence for all cemeteries in our area that might consider building their own.
Currently our initiative is targeted at Middletown residents. We are using social media, lawn signs, flyers and banners to step up awareness. There is an article in The Two River Times, which will bring much needed attention to the issue.
Why are we against crematoriums in residential neighborhoods? There is a wealth of information on the Internet of the dangers and hazards of the toxins released to the environment. For example, mercury from fillings is released, toxins from medical devices that are left in the bodies as well as the other materials that are burned with the body add to the toxic mix. A 2019 article published by the Journal of the American Medical Association wrote about a new threat to us, radioactive exposure from bodies of cancer patients who received chemotherapy prior to their death. We ask for all people to please support this cause and to fight against the precedent this case will set for the future of our communities. On MARCH 20th we need people to show up and voice their opposition to this. On the Agenda for that date, the Planning Board is due to deliver a decision. We need to get NUMBERS and people to support this fight and attend that meeting. Please join this fight and let’s stand together.
